Day and Night Tariff

Heating your home in Spain can be a very expensive necessity. During the summer months cooling your home also presents us with similar problems, although more easily overcome!

Electricity prices have been going up at speed for the past few years and they are set to rise further especially when the new IVA (VAT) rates come into force this year. So when you are on a budget anything that can be done to reduce those bills is worth considering.

I would recommend anyone to consider the Day/Night tariff (Energía Día y Noche (Discriminación Horaria)) offered by Iberdrola and most other suppliers of electricity here in Spain. The Day and Night Tariff can drastically reduce your electricity bills if used wisely. If your from the UK you will probably remember the Economy 7 service; well this is very similar.

What's it All About

You pay a slightly higher rate for usage during the day but this is offset by a huge reduction for your consumption during the night.

More or less the following tariff will apply:

POWER SIGNED UP MORE THAN 10 KW

PERIOD

PEAK

OFF-PEAK

POWER CHARGE €/KW AND YEAR

27.947329

27.947329

ENERGY CHARGE €/KWH

0.155480

0.063771

POWER SIGNED UP EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN 10 KW

PERIOD

PEAK

OFF-PEAK

POWER CHARGE €/KW AND YEAR

20.633129

20.633129

ENERGY CHARGE €/KWH

0.138960

0.058923

The Process.

Contact Iberdrola and ask them to consider your bills for reductions. (They will help you if they can)

I suggest going to the Iberdrola office in your area. Mine for Orihuela Costa is in Pila on the main High Street within the electrical supplies shop,

In there I asked about the Night/Day tariff which basically offers a cheap rate for the night (off peak times) and a slightly higher rate for the day. They changed the contract there and then and sure enough we had a new meter delivered and fitted free of charge within a few days. (This is all available for viewing on the Iberdrola website https://www.iberdrola.es/webibd/corporativa/iberdrola?cambioIdioma=ESWEBCLIHOGELEDIS (in English) and further links given below will help.

We now iron, heat our water, use the washing machine etc etc during the off peak times which run from 10pm until midday. Our consumption for the day is now about 30% of our total consumption leaving us with a huge saving.
